Hi,

My name is _______ and I am a constituent from_____ . I am calling to urge Governor Cuomo to stop SUNY Downstate’s plans to close Long Island College Hospital.

The continued operation of Long Island College Hospital is vital to the welfare of my community. We need to make sure that the hospital remains fully open.

Governor Cuomo needs to direct the Department of Health and SUNY too keep LICH open.

Yesterday, during a major heatwave, Long Island College Hospital was turning away ambulances and closing services. I was proud to stand with community leaders and rally against the closure of Long Island College Hospital, going so far as to occupy the administraive floor and demand that SUNY reverse its plan to close the hospital.

Keeping LICH open is critical to the health of our communities. When my son fell ill with bronchiolitis, we brought him to LICH to get the care he needed. What will happen if a child in Red Hook gets bronchiolitis? Or if someone in Brooklyn Heights goes into cardiac arrest? Together with State Senator Daniel Squadron, Councilmember Steve Levin, and Public Advocate Bill de Blasio, as well as LICH employees and nearby residents, we protested SUNY’s plan and stormed into the hospital to demand answers about the closing.

Unfortunately, today Governor Cuomo’s Department of Health approved a portion of SUNY’s closure plan.

All patients will be transferred out and the hospital will no longer be admitting patients. In addition to this, the emergency room is closing and there will no longer be elective procedures performed in the hospital. Ambulances will continue to be diverted from LICH to other local hospitals. This not only puts a strain on nearby institutions, but also puts patients in unnecessary danger. The consequences for the community will be disastrous if the shutdown continues.. This is why we need Governor Cuomo to step in and stop this closure.

In February, SUNY filed a plan to close LICH with the New York State Department of Health, citing financial losses. Thanks to hard work by 1199SEIU, the New York State Nurses Association, the Concerned Physicians of LICH, and the Cobble Hill Association, this plan was stopped and Brooklyn Supreme Court Judge Baynes temporarily blocked the plan. However, SUNY disregarded this clear directive not to close LICH and has been taking harmful and shortsighted actions that threaten the health of our community.
