Prospect Park West Manhole Explosions

Prospect Park West Manhole Explosions

I have been in contact with the FDNY regarding the manhole explosions on Prospect Park West and 5th Street. Two individuals were injured. One hit by the manhole cover that was launched into the air by the pressure that had built from a fire under the street, and another from a broken window that shattered during the blast. Both are now in stable condition. Con Edison has turned off the power in the area while they work to resolve these problems, and they won’t turn the power back on until they are confident that the problem has been completely solved. My office will continue to monitor the situation.

These incidences are likely a result of corrosion of electrical wiring in the manhole due to the salt used to melt snow and ice on the roads. These small explosions happen, though infrequently, across the city during periods of wintry weather. There have not been any other related events in our area, and while the explosions on Prospect Park West were an isolated incidence, officials are urging anyone on the street who sees dark, brown smoke coming out of a manhole to cross to the opposite side of the street and call 911 right away.
