Statement on "The Third Jihad"
Statement by Councilmember Brad Lander on NYPD’s misinformation about “The Third Jihad” screening:
"I'm deeply troubled by NYPD Deputy Commissioner Paul Browne's pattern of misinformation about the misleading and hate-inspired film 'The Third Jihad,' and that the film was authorized by the NYPD as a training film for 1,500 officers. Unfortunately, this pattern of deception is not limited to the film itself. Browne originally denied the entire existence of the NYPD's Demographics Unit, which has engaged in extensive surveillance of Muslim communities, until the AP published documents that proved its existence. He has made it very difficult to believe what the NYPD says about surveillance in general, and cast fundamental doubts on the agency’s claim that it has not engaged in prohibited racial and religious targeting. I am renewing my call for oversight hearings on the NYPD's surveillance and counter-intelligence program -- and for a new set of accountability mechanisms that balance our need for security, appropriate confidentiality in criminal investigations, respect for civil liberties, and telling the truth."
