Street Safety Changes PS/IS 282

Street Safety Changes PS/IS 282

I’m pleased to report an important street safety improvement at PS/IS 282 in Park Slope which will hopefully alleviate a dangerous situation at student drop-off and pick-up times.  With many buses and family vehicles converging on narrow streets at the school, Principal Hoke raised with me his concern about students crossing between parked cars and having to board buses from the street side rather than the curb.  At the request of my office, representatives of the Department of Transportation (DOT) and the 78th Precinct’s Community Affairs Department joined with school leadership and a member of my staff last week to observe the situation at school dismissal.  They immediately understood the situation and proposed changes for bus loading, parent vehicle standing, and teacher parking.  The DOT additionally offered to provide safety seminars for the students and to consider other ways to work with the school  to be sure students and staff understand safe practices.  While the changes will take a few months,  I’m deeply appreciative of the DOT and the 78th Precinct for their work to ensure that the PS /IS 282 students remain safe.
