Support our immigrant neighbors with a Thanksgiving contribution
The election of Donald Trump has made this a fearful time for many of our immigrant neighbors, especially in Sunset Park and Kensington. We are committed to working closely together with these communities in the days ahead.
Together, we can make work to sure our immigrant communities feel welcomed. We can provide legal assistance, and perhaps even put ourselves on the line with them if the time comes. Big thanks to everyone who attended the Day of Unity and Solidarity in Sunset Park yesterday sponsored by Council Member Carlos Menchaca.
Here’s what you can do today: At yesterday's Unity Festival, more than 130 families signed up (for the first time) to ask for help with their Thanksgiving meal. Council Member Menchaca is working with the Center for Family Life to make sure they get the help they need. But it's going to cost $6,500, and we need to raise it right now.
Can you help? We've got a lot to be grateful for. If you're in a position to make a contribution today, it would help provide some much needed comfort for our immigrant neighbors this Thanksgiving ... and show that we'll be there for them when it counts.
Here’s how you can help:
- Click on this donation link
- At the bottom of the form enter “Center for Family Life” in first “designation” drop-down menu
- And enter “Neighbors Helping Neighbors Food Pantry” in the second “dedication” field
Even if you aren’t able to donate, here are a few more updates, actions, and local organizing efforts you can join today:
The Beastie Boys (and hundreds of neighbors) helped us stand together against hate
After anti-Semitic graffiti was spray painted on the playground at Adam Yauch Park in Brooklyn Heights, hundreds of neighbors (including the Beastie Boys’ Adam “Ad-Rock” Horovitz) turned out on Sunday morning to fill every square inch of the park and stand together united against hatred. You can read about the packed rally in the Daily News or listen to the speakers here. Thanks to NY State Senator Daniel Squadron for organizing.
Tell Paul Ryan “We like the Affordable Care Act, and we want to keep it”
Paul Ryan is conducting a (very biased) phone poll on the ACA (Obamacare), hoping to hear overwhelming popular opposition to it. Let's turn that around! If you would like to express your support for the Affordable Care Act, it takes less than 2 minutes. Here's how:
1. Call 202-225-0600 for Speaker Paul Ryan's office.
2. There's a minute of silence. Wait for the voice, it's coming.
3. Press 2 to weigh in on the issue of the Affordable Care Act.
4. There will be a brief recorded message about HR-3762 (Paul Ryan's proposal to gut the ACA) and President Obama's veto to stop it.
5. Indicate your opinion with the press of a button. Press 1 if you support Obamacare, press 2 if you oppose it.
6. Tell your friends and neighbors to call too.
Sign the Petition to #RegisterMeFirst and stand with our Muslim Neighbors
President-elect Donald Trump wants to require all Muslims to register in a government database, violating civil rights and fundamental American Constitutional protections on freedom of religion. If he does, all of us – Jews, Christians, Buddhists, atheists, agnostics, and everyone else – must pledge to register as Muslims on day one. #RegisterMeFirst
If you haven’t already I urge you to join me in pledging to sign up on the first day the registry is open, whatever your religion, ethnicity, national origin, or background.
