Victory at the Carwash!

Victory at the Carwash!

I’m very excited to share with you some good news from the carwasheros at Vegas Auto Spa. Earlier today, they announced a landmark new contract and the end of their four-month long strike. The workers will be off the picket line and back at work on Monday.

The new contract includes wage hikes, strong worker protections like paid time off, sharing of hours and overtime, protections for immigrant workers, and a $1,500 per-person signing bonus. The owner also agreed to settle a suit the workers filed for wage and hour violations. It’s an all-around win for the brave workers who so courageously put their jobs on the line, and another win for low wage workers everywhere. When workers stand up for better treatment, their actions have echo effects that stretch far beyond their shop.

It’s been a long fight involving fundraisers, marches, arrests, and many freezing cold days on the picket line, and I’m thankful to our community for standing strong with our workers. Every dollar donated, every cup of hot chocolate dropped off, and every “si, se puede” chanted made all the difference in achieving this win. I’m proud to have been a part of this effort, but I’m even prouder to be part of a community that worked so hard on behalf of these workers.

I’d like to especially thank RWDSU, Make the Road NY, and NY Communities for Change for their assistance in creating an impactful strike and keeping negotiations strong. I’m also thankful to Council Member Carlos Menchaca for his involvement alongside mine during our civil disobedience arrest and to the Speaker of the Council Melissa Mark-Viverito for standing with us, and standing up for carwash workers across the city. I’m also deeply grateful to Rabbi Ellen Lippmann, and congregation Kolot Chayeinu for being so involved in this fight from the very beginning.

With a new fair contract secured, I’ll be proud to take my car to Vegas Auto Spa, and show that I support businesses that do what is right for their workers, and I hope you feel the same. I plan on getting my spring carwash done at Vegas Auto Spa, and I hope all of Park Slope will join me.

Thanks for standing with our workers.
