Tell DOT to Make Carroll and Columbia St. Safer!

I’m writing today to ask you to add your voice to the many families calling for better street safety at the dangerous intersection of Carroll and Columbia.

More families than ever reside west of the BQE. But on Columbia Street between Union and Summit (which families cross to get to and from PS 58, Red Hook Playgroup, the B61 stop, and Mother Cabrini Park) there are no stop lights, stop signs, speed bumps, and almost no crosswalks. Cars and trucks zoom off the BQE, without any traffic calming measures to make them slow down and look out for our kids.

One of the area’s worst intersections is at Carroll and Columbia Street, which in its current state presents a daily threat to pedestrians, including 50 preschoolers from the Red Hook Playgroup, who cross daily to travel to and from Mother Cabrini Playground.

The NYC DOT has conducted a number of traffic studies at this intersection, the most recent of which again yielded results that a traffic signal “was not warranted”. This is unacceptable, and the problem is only getting worse. Major accidents this past fall left five people injured. Following these crashes, neighbors in Columbia Waterfront and my office again asked DOT to take a look at this dangerous intersection. NYC DOT promised us a study completed in March 2016. March is long past, and we haven’t heard a thing.

We can’t let DOT’s pattern of inaction continue. Sign this petition to tell NYC DOT that our kids need better street safety at Columbia and Carroll.

If the DOT is really committed to Vision Zero they’ll see why we need a safer intersection at Carroll and Columbia streets. Add your name here, and demand that DOT take action to make this intersection safer.

Together we’ll make our streets safer.
