Tuesday, August 3rd was National Night Out Against Crime, a nationwide event that has taken place every summer for the last 27 years. As part of this event, police officers join together with local residents and civic groups to sponsor an evening of activities in their precincts that will strengthen the police-community relationships. Public Hearing On Proposed Expansion of Park Slope Landmark District

Thanks to the hard work of Park Slope residents,  the Park Slope Civic Council, and local elected officials, the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission  voted earlier today to put a public hearing on the calendar (date to be determined) to seriously consider the expansion of the Park Slope Historic District. The proposed expansion would add the blocks between Seventh and Eight Avenues, from Seventh Street through 14th Street , as well as areas adjacent to Bartel Pritchard Square (the full proposed boundaries are available on the LPC website. Free Theatre in Park Slope

The Piper Theater has returned this summer with free theatre for Brooklyn families! 

This month, The Piper Theater is bringing The Nocturnes, written by John Connelly and directed by Nigel Williams to Park Slope. The story entails a dark summer night with tales of lost lovers, witches, and demons. Throughout July, Piper will also be putting on youth productions that are fun for the whole family, including adaptations of Little Shop of Horrors, The Taming of the Shrew and As You Like It. Stalled Development in the 39th Council District

We need to make these sites into assets for the community!

Many of these developments are causing real hazards for their neighbors, with fences falling down on sidewalks, loose construction debris that can become deadly in high winds, and unsecured sites that are dangerous for children and an invitation to squatting.

Report: Brooklyn Leads in Derelict Construction Sites

Brooklyn is pockmarked by a disproportionate number of abandoned development sites compared with the rest of the city, according to a report released last week by Eastern Consolidated, an investment services firm in Manhattan. Fallow sites might do little for the local economy, but they can also pose serious health hazards, according to Councilman Brad Lander (D–Park Slope), who created an interactive Web site, www.stalleddevelopment.com, to track the zombies lurking in his district. Brooklyn Braces for Loss of Bus Lines

As part of a desperate attempt to save cash, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority has put two popular area bus lines, the B71 and the B75, on the chopping block. “These buses are the lifeblood of the neighborhood,” says City Councilman Brad Lander. “Carroll Gardens has a lot of seniors, and those seniors can't ride the subway.
