Join My Daughter to Support Global Education for Girls

I don't usually e-mail about personal things, but this one is different.

My daughter Rosa and her friends have been inspired by Malala Yousafzai's courageous stand for girls' education all around the world. They feel lucky to have great schools here in Brooklyn, and can't believe that over 60 million girls around the world don't have the chance to go to school. So a few years ago, they started organizing the "Girls Read for Girls" Read-a-thon.

The read-a-thon raises money for The Malala Fund and the money raised will help empower girls through education, raise awareness of gender equity issues, and inspire young people to make change in their communities.

Girls and boys in grades K - 8 are welcome. So if you know any, please share this e-mail, and encourage them to register, participate in the read-a-thon, and ask friends and family to sponsor their reading with contributions to The Malala Fund.

A little more info for potential participants:

Please come to the library a few minutes before 1:00 to check in. The event kicks off with a short program with some entertainment & learning opportunities (last year Public Advocate Tish James, Council Member Laurie Cumbo, and Linda Sarsour addressed the readers).

Particpants then spread out across the beautiful library and read for about 90 minutes! Check out will start around 3:30.

Pledges and Contributions:
All proceeds from the 2015 Girls Read for Girls Read-a-thon will benefit The Malala Fund. Girls determine their reading goal and then ask supporters for a per page pledge or a one-time contribution. Sample pledge sheet & e-mail asking for contributions are available on the event page.

Supporters can contribute directly to The Malala Fund online via a credit card here

Readers who collect contributions in advance (checks made payable to The Malala Fund) can bring them on November 15. After the event, supporters can still contribute online or send checks directly to The Malala Fund (just be sure to write Brooklyn Girls Read for Girls in the memo line).

Any questions? E-mail them to brooklyngirlsreadforgirls [at] gmail [dot] com.

Please register today and start signing up pledges!

We'll see you on Sunday, November 15th at 1 p.m. at the Brooklyn Public Library Central Branch!
