Borough Park, NY - City Councilmembers Brad Lander and David Greenfield announced that funding for Borough Park’s Beth Jacob Day Care Center and Gan Day Care Center has been fully restored. Half of the classrooms in these centers had been targeted for cuts under the budget proposed by the Bloomberg Administration earlier this year. Read more »

Help clean-up Dome Playground on Sunday, August 7th

Last year, Borough President Marty Markowitz and I were able to allocate $900,000 in city funds to renovate Dome Playground. When I brought together residents from Kensington and Borough Park in March to discuss their visions for how that money could be used, I was thrilled with the result. Over fifty people came to the meeting and sent a clear message to me and the Parks Department: this is our park and we want to make it better. Read more »

A few thoughts after my shiva visit to the Kletsky's

Earlier this week, I visited the family of Leiby Kletsky, the 8-year-old boy from Borough Park who was so brutally and senselessly kidnapped and murdered last week (something I hope will be the hardest shiva call that I will ever have to make).

No words can ease or describe the grief, or heal the wounds, but -- like so many people I've talked to -- I've been thinking about it constantly for the past week, and wanted at least to write down some of what I've been feeling.

Councilmembers: Eliminating Child Care Unfair to Orthodox Jews

New York, NY - Fifteen New York City Councilmembers – including members of the Council’s Jewish Caucus and others representing Jewish communities – sent a letter to Deputy Mayor Linda Gibbs to protest the unfair treatment of Orthodox children and families in the City’s plan to eliminate child care services, and demand a restoration of this essential funding.

The letter was organized by Councilmember Brad Lander, who represents part of Borough Park, chairs the Jewish Caucus. Read more »
