Statement on the Passage of the Culver El Rezoning

I am pleased to announce that the City Council approved the Culver El Rezoning today. By combining the strengths of the initial proposal (developed by community organizations and elected officials in 2005) with changes suggested by community members and achieved by the Council, the rezoning we passed today will create much-needed and long-term affordable homeownership, preserve commercial and manufacturing jobs, and set a path for addressing open space and school over-crowding issues in the surrounding neighborhoods. Shared Ride Service Along Former B23 Route Launches

Yesterday was the first day of the new "Group Ride Vehicle Pilot Program" that the NYC Taxi & Limousine Commission has launched to provide shared ride van service along the former B23 route bus route.

Best Wishes for a Safe and Happy New Year

Yesterday I visited Motty Israel, the last of the injured Shomrim members still in recovery after last week’s shooting. Fortunately he is on his way to a full recovery, and I wished him, and the other Shomrim members a happy Rosh Hashanah, and my hopes for a New Year that is filled with much more peace and happiness. For those of you who are celebrating the holiday this week, I wish you and your family a happy, peaceful, prosperous, and healthy New Year.

I want to extend my thanks and prayers to the four members of the Borough Park Shomrim/Brooklyn South Safety Patrol who were shot last night in the course of apprehending a suspect on 10th Ave in Borough Park. I am deeply hopeful that all four will make a swift and complete recovery, and especially grateful for the courage and extraordinary dedication of all the Shomrim members to the safety of our community. Chabad of Kensington honors Lander

Chabad Lubavitch of Kensington hosted its 4th annual camp banquet on Sunday, August 15, 2010 at its Gan Israel Day Camp location on Ocean Parkway. Chabad Lubavitch of Kensington is a Brooklyn branch of international Chabad that unites over 5,000 Jewish families of New York’s Russian immigrant community. Rabbi Moshe Chaim and Doba Levin have opened their hearts and home to thousands of immigrants from the former Soviet Union, as well as American and Israeli Jews. The Gan Israel summer day camp is but one of Chabad of Kensington’s many programs and activities that assists thousands of Russian Jewish immigrants and their young families building new lives in New York.

The organization invited Councilmember Brad Lander to be the Guest of Honor at the Grand Banquet. Mr. Lander represents Kensington, Borough Park, and other Brooklyn neighborhoods in the City Council. Read more »

Brad Participates in National Night Out Against Crime

Tuesday, August 3rd was National Night Out Against Crime, a nationwide event that has taken place every summer for the last 27 years. As part of this event, police officers join together with local residents and civic groups to sponsor an evening of activities in their precincts that will strengthen the police-community relationships. We need to make these sites into assets for the community!

Many of these developments are causing real hazards for their neighbors, with fences falling down on sidewalks, loose construction debris that can become deadly in high winds, and unsecured sites that are dangerous for children and an invitation to squatting.
