Public school on busy 4th Ave will get two gates for main entrance & only ADA-accessible area. The gates will secure play area & connect the yard to garden to provide safe, fun & accessible space for 300+ kids.

Cost: $200,000

Location: 211 8th Avenue

Who Benefits: PS 118, The Maurice Sendak School is a growing public school that serves more than 300 students. The school yard is used every day for drop-off, pick-up, outdoor play and for emergency exits from the building.

Project Description:The PS 118 yard is located on busy 4th Ave. The 7th St swing gate is massively heavy and scrapes the surface of the only ADA-accessible area on school grounds when it is opened/closed. When closed, it gapes, making it cumbersome and insecure. This area is used for drop-off, pick-up, outdoor play, school activities (i.e. Movie Nights, Grandparents’ Day & community events like Marathon Day). The gate is also used as an emergency exit, so easy opening is essential for safety. A lighter rolling gate would secure the grounds and prevent more damage. Another fence blocks the garden from the yard, necessitating students walk nearly a block to enter one from the other. Replacing one fence panel with a pass-thru gate would facilitate access.
